Elmira College is a private, coeducational liberal arts college emphasizing both general and professional education in the belief that this provides the best preparation for responsible global citizenship and a lifetime of careers. Academic programs are built upon strong general education in the liberal arts and sciences, with special attention given to the development of communication skills and the exploration of world cultures. The College seeks to blend theory with practice beyond the classroom and has devised co-curricular experiences in intercollegiate athletics, career planning, residence life, student activities, and student leadership which complement academic programs.

Elmira College is proud to support current, former, and prospective military students. Elmira has an Army ROTC program in partnership with Cornell University. Courses for this program are available on both campuses. Elmira also partners with Cornell for the Air Force ROTC program, and all of those classes are held at Cornell University. In addition to our own academic and leadership scholarship programs, Elmira also participates in the ROTC Scholarship program for high-school and college students, as well as the Yellow Ribbon Program for veterans.
